Nigeria’s Super Falcons are set to face the reigning champions, Banyana Banyana from South Africa, in the semi-finals of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). This matchup was finalized after South Africa triumphed over Senegal 4-1 in a penalty shootout during Saturday’s quarter-final match. The game remained scoreless after both regular time and extra time, leading to penalties. South Africa successfully converted all four of their penalty kicks, while Senegal had two of theirs saved by the goalkeeper. The Super Falcons aim to seek redemption for their loss to South Africa in their first match of the 2022 tournament, where South Africa won 2-1 and ultimately took home their first WAFCON title. Previously, the two teams faced off in the qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where the Super Falcons emerged victorious with a 1-0 aggregate score. The semi-final match between the Super Falcons and South Africa is scheduled for Tuesday, July 22. Meanwhile, host nation Morocco will compete against Ghana’s Black Queens in the other semi-final. To reach this stage, Ghana needed a penalty shootout to defeat Algeria, winning 4-2 after a 0-0 draw in regular and extra time.
