China has said it has seen a ‘glimmer of hope’ for peace in the efforts aimed at restoring peace in the Middle East.
China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi said that a “glimmer of hope” for peace has emerged due to efforts aimed at halting the war.
This is despite Tehran saying it remains committed to continuing the fight.
Wang Yi called for dialogue in separate discussions with his Turkish and Egyptian counterparts, implying that both Tehran and Washington have demonstrated indications of their readiness to return to negotiations.
“With both the United States and Iran indicating a willingness to engage in talks, a glimmer of hope for peace has emerged,” Wang conveyed to Egyptian foreign minister Badr Abdelatty, as per a Beijing statement released late on Wednesday and reported by Agence France-Presse.
This statement was made just hours before Iranian foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi remarked that “up to this point, no negotiations have occurred, and I believe our stance is entirely principled.”
“To speak of negotiations at this juncture is to acknowledge defeat,” he added.
US President Donald Trump asserted on Wednesday that Iran was participating in peace discussions, suggesting that Tehran’s denials stem from fears among Iranian negotiators of being killed by their own faction.
Wang informed Turkey’s foreign minister, Hakan Fidan, during their conversation that the rights and wrongs of the conflict in the Middle East are “crystal clear,” and he expressed support for Turkey in its efforts to facilitate the resumption of negotiations.
Turkey has been involved in “intense” diplomatic initiatives to bring an end to the war by engaging with both Washington and Tehran, Fidan stated this month.
Wang remarked, “Extending this war would only lead to more casualties and unnecessary losses, resulting in a further escalation of the conflict.”
