French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday expressed his backing for Spain following US President Donald Trump’s threats to “terminate all trades” with the country.
As reported by French newspaper Le Parisien, Macron had a phone conversation with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to demonstrate France’s commitment to “European solidarity” amidst the US’s coercive economic threats against Spain.
Trump had issued the threat after Spain declined to permit the use of its base for potential military actions against Iran.
In response, Sanchez firmly dismissed the US threats, stating that Spain would not succumb to “reprisals from anyone”.
Sanchez was addressing Spaniards in a nationwide broadcast on Wednesday.
