
The leader of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, and the Ghanaian government have criticized an attack that happened on Friday at a UN site in southern Lebanon.
This attack caused serious injuries to three Ghanaian peacekeepers who work for the United Nation.
Ghana stated it has officially filed a complaint with the United Nations.
It called for “the people responsible to be found and punished, because the attack is a serious break of international rules and is considered a war crime, and goes against the safety guarantees given to United Nations peacekeepers.”
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has claimed that Israel is attacking them, and the UN peacekeeping group has stated it will look into the situation.
A spokesperson for the United Nations, Stephane Dujarric, stated that Secretary-General António Guterres “strongly condemns the incident that happened on Friday, March 6, where three Ghanaian peacekeepers from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, were injured while stationed in Al Qawzah, which is in the southwestern part of Lebanon.”
The secretary-general said that the safety and security of UN staff and their property should always be protected, and that anyone who causes harm must be made responsible and the UN’s facilities must be treated with complete respect.
In an official letter to the UN, the government of Ghana asked for a complete, quick, fair, and open investigation into the situation around the attack on people working for international peace and security.
Also, Germany has criticized the recent the attack.
The German Foreign Ministry called the attack “unacceptable.”
“Targeting UN peacekeepers is unacceptable. We strongly oppose the attack on a UNIFIL facility in southern Lebanon, which has injured several Ghanaian peacekeepers.
The statement posted on X added. “We ask all parties to make sure the safety and security of UN peacekeepers is always protected.”
