The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, has rolled out an intelligence-driven traffic management strategy aimed at maintaining free flow of traffic and enhancing public safety across the state during the yuletide.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this on Sunday, noting that the initiative was designed to proactively manage the surge in movement and activities traditionally associated with the end-of-year season.
He explained that yuletide festivities often come with increased traffic pressure arising from concerts, carnivals, religious programmes, social events and other leisure activities across the metropolis.
āConsequently, LASTMA has elevated its operational readiness through deployment of seasoned officers, strengthened surveillance and round-the-clock monitoring of critical corridors,ā he said.
He said special focus would be placed on event-heavy zones, commercial hubs and major highways to prevent avoidable congestion and ensure orderly movement.
The LASTMA chief advised owners and managers of event centres, nightclubs and lounges to put in place adequate parking and internal traffic arrangements capable of accommodating their patrons within designated premises.
āSuch practices flagrantly infringe upon the collective right of Lagosians to safe, orderly and unhindered mobility,ā he said.
Bakare-Oki also cautioned market leaders and traders against displaying goods on roadways, sidewalks and pedestrian paths, noting that such practices force pedestrians into traffic lanes, increasing the risk of accidents and congestion.
āLASTMA advises motorists to ensure vehicles are mechanically sound and strongly warns against alcohol consumption, speeding and reckless driving,ā he said.
According to him, enforcement teams will be actively engaged in addressing illegal parking, road obstructions, speeding and impaired driving throughout the holiday period.
Bakare-Oki urged road users to cooperate with traffic officers, comply with traffic regulations and exercise patience, adding that collective responsibility is essential to achieving a safe and smooth festive season.
He reminded residents that emergencies could be reported through LASTMAās toll-free hotline, 0800 005 27862.
He added that tow-trucks and the agencyās 24-hour night response teams have been deployed across the state, with particular attention to high-traffic corridors such as the Lekki-Ajah axis.
