Senator Gbenga Daniel, who represents Ogun East, has expressed his condolences for the passing of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona III, the Awujale and supreme leader of Ijebuland, who has died at the age of 91. Following the signing of the condolence register at the private residence of the deceased monarch, the former Ogun State governor spoke with reporters. He referred to the passing of the Awujale as a tragic loss, emphasizing that the community would greatly miss the royal figure’s nurturing guidance. He remarked, “This is an incredibly sorrowful death; he has cared for this community for nearly sixty years, making him one of the longest-serving monarchs in Nigeria. The atmosphere in Ijebuland will certainly change, as the people have relied on his fatherly support, a remarkable leader who has steered the region effectively.” In memory of the late king, Dare Alebiosu, the chairman of the Ijebu Ode local government, announced the temporary closure of all three major markets in Ijebu-Ode. The markets affected are Ita-Ale, Ita-Osu, and Oke-Aje, with the closure set to begin on Monday, July 14, 2025. Alebiosu stated in a press release that the closure aligns with traditional customs and aims to afford all residents of Ijebuland a chance to mourn. “Market activities will resume on a date that will be communicated later, following discussions with the relevant traditional authorities. We ask all traders and residents to comply with these measures calmly and respectfully.” “May our cherished Kabiyesi’s soul find eternal peace,” he continued.
