Defender Ashleigh Plumptre of the Super Falcons expressed her disappointment regarding the team’s accommodation during the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The players were housed in a small hotel lacking a gym and pool. In an interview with Lagos Talks FM, the Al-Ittihad player, who was crucial in securing the team’s 10th WAFCON title against Morocco in the final, highlighted the need for better investment and planning. “I know our team has talent, but teams like England, recent Euro winners, benefit from significant investment and careful organization, which motivates them,” said the England-born Nigerian. “It’s the small details such as the resources available, what drives their training, and how they recover.” During the tournament, a few of us girls felt exhausted at the end because we were staying at a hotel in Morocco that lacked a gym, and I’m unsure who is responsible for that. “Those of us who wanted to focus on recovery were unable to do so. As the tournament was nearing its conclusion, we were brought to a public gym to utilize its facilities. The organization is done by CAF, but I’m unsure who is responsible for the issue. Throughout the tournament, prior to our relocation to Rabat, the hotel we stayed at until the semi-finals lacked both a gym and a pool or any similar amenities. It was one of those small hotels located in the city… “That was quite challenging for someone like me who is still in the process of healing.” Last year, I suffered an injury, and I still need to continue putting strain on my Achilles. I believe some of the other girls also want to maintain their strength.
