Onjeh calls on the Assembly to resolve the impasse and review Alia’s nominees.

The APC candidate for Benue South, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has called on the Benue State House of Assembly to put aside political disagreements and quickly screen and approve the commissioner nominees put forward by Governor Hyacinth Alia. This comment was made in a statement released by Onjeh, who is vying for the Benue South Senatorial District. He expressed his views following the recent actions of the Assembly, headed by Speaker Rt. Hon. Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh chose to reject the Governor’s proposal to initiate the screening process on August 8, 2025. Lawmakers cited unresolved matters, such as the Governor’s alleged failure to provide official vehicles for certain members and his non-enforcement of suspension orders for specific officials. Onjeh characterized the situation as a political stalemate that endangers the state’s progress. While he acknowledged the necessity of oversight, he warned against creating political impasses that undermine governance. Onjeh stated that the concerns raised by the Assembly were more about entitlements than constitutional obligations, urging members to maintain the House’s integrity and avoid actions driven by selfish or political interests. The separation of powers does not imply that any particular branch of government is without flaws. Should the executive branch adhere to a legislative decision that is incorrect, even if it adversely affects fairness and the public? He called on the Speaker to reflect on his own political experiences with Governor Alia. Onjeh pointed out that previous attempts have been made to sabotage the Governor’s leadership, such as obstructing funding and abusing the legal system. He cautioned, “We must prevent the Governor’s adversaries from utilizing this House to oppose him.” He also condemned individuals who are instigating conflicts within local government in Benue South in order to promote their own political candidates. “In my local government area, Ogbadibo, my chosen candidate was not elected, but I have never attempted to sabotage the chairman who was elected.” “Politics should not be fueled by resentment,” he said. Onjeh encouraged APC lawmakers to put political differences aside and support the collaboration between President Tinubu and the National Assembly, emphasizing that the majority should work together for governance. He pointed out that the House can only propose recommendations, not compel the Governor to take action. “Even if the National Assembly alters the Constitution, the President retains the power to veto it.” In this case, the requests made by the Assembly are fully within the authority of the Governor.
