Financial crisis in the Futures Media Group: a critical situation which weakens workers and activities

Like most of the press companies in Senegal, Groupe Futurs Médias is experiencing an unprecedented economic and financial crisis. The difficulties have been markedly accentuated in recent months, due to the interaction of several factors both internal and external relating to the structural decline in advertising revenues and newspaper sales, to tax refunds without appeal, to payments in arrears, to aggressive or unfair competition by certain players and to lax regulation of the sector. In spite of these difficulties, le Groupe Futurs Médias has made every effort to comply with its legal, regulatory, fiscal and social obligations. However, despite the efforts and goodwill shown by the Board of Directors, the Directorate-General and all stakeholders in the organisation, deficits have accumulated over time. Consequently, hundreds of workers in the Group are experiencing wage delays or arrears. (Laughter)
