The Ambassador of South Africa in France, Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mthethwa, aged 58, was found dead on Tuesday morning at the foot of the Hyatt Regency hotel, situated at Porte Maillot in the west of Paris. He had been missing since Monday, after his wife had reported his absence to the French police, following the receipt of an unsettling message from him in the evening. According to the Paris public prosecutor’s office, the ambassador’s body was discovered directly under the hotel, and the investigators suspected that he had fallen from the 22nd floor, where he had reserved a room. The window of this room would have been forced, which reinforces the hypothesis of a voluntary jump. The last signal from his phone was located Monday around 3 p.m. near the Bois de Boulogne, a large Parisian park. An investigation has been opened to determine the exact circumstances of his death, with a police search launched from the report of his disappearance, including cynophilic teams, due to fears of a possible suicide. Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mthethwa, often called “Nathi” Mthethwa, was an emblematic figure of South African politics.
