The Tribunal des flagrants délits de Dakar was the scene, this Wednesday, of a tense hearing in the case involving Daba Mbodji, also known under the pseudonym of Gaïndé Macky. Aged 46 and working as a trader in the city of Fadia, the accused appeared for alleged offences against a political figure, following statements made live on TikTok. The public prosecutor requested a sentence of six months’ imprisonment, while the defence pleaded for a suspension. The case was put to trial on 20 October. It all started with a video broadcast live on the TikTok platform, in which Daba Mbodji, a prominent member of the Alliance for the Republic (APR), the ruling party under Macky Sall, made some virulent comments. In this sequence, which has become viral, she made remarks deemed offensive against Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Parti des Travailleurs et de la Justice Sociale (PASTEF) and emblematic figure of the Senegalese opposition.
The prosecution requires six months of prison for Ousmane Sonko.
