Habitat Social au Sénégal: The government for dignity, justice and sovereignty

The Government reaffirmed its firm commitment to guaranteeing access to housing for all and to strengthening national autonomy in this vital sector. In Dakar on Monday, the Minister for Urban Planning, Local Government and Territorial Planning, Moussa Balla Fofana, raised the question of social housing to the rank of national priority, describing it as “a guarantee of dignity, social justice and independence”. President of a meeting devoted to the environment, Mr. Fofana insisted that housing should no longer be seen as a simple economic commodity. It is, according to him, a fundamental right, a duty for the State and a social project essential to the Senegalese civilization. The objective of this initiative is to trace the path towards an accessible, resilient and autonomous habitat, capable of meeting the needs of the population. The Minister recalled the existence of a significant structural deficit, estimated at a need for 500 000 housing units within ten years. For the government, this figure represents the hope of thousands of families seeking a stable and secure home. In this context, the National Programme for Access to Housing and Urban Renewal (PNALRU) is presented as more than a sectoral policy.
