Coup d’État in Guinea-Bissau: The military denounces the involvement of politicians

Guinea-Bissau is at the centre of the news following the denunciation of an attempted coup d’état by the General Staff of the Armed Forces. L’armée pointe du doigt a conspiracy which would have involved not only military elements, but also national political personalities. L’alerte was officially given during a press conference held this Thursday at the quartier général de l’Amura in Bissau. Le chef d’état-major adjoint des forces armées, Mamadu Nkrumah, has been released on parole for firmly denouncing the alleged acts. According to information relayed by the local press, the failed coup de force was directed by the director of the military training center of Cumeré, Dabana Na Walna, who is suspected of having acted in complicity with certain politicians of the country. Mamadu Nkrumah stressed that the military authorities are taking the situation very seriously. It was obliged to reassure the nation and the international community by affirming that the General Staff ” closely follows the situation ” and undertakes to take ” all the necessary measures ” to guarantee ” stability and constitutional order ” in Guinea-Bissau. This denunciation comes in the context of a strong political instability in the country, marked by a history of coups d’état and recurrent political crises. The army assures that an investigation is underway to elucidate all the ramifications of this attempt.
