Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza congratulated the Class of 2024 for the excellent matric results. Reacting to the results released on Monday, Xhakaza congratulated the learners, teachers and stakeholders who made this achievement possible.
“Months of hard work and sleepless nights have finally paid off. Well done to everyone, including the parents and families who supported these learners as they navigated through the matric exams last year, albeit under difficult and testing conditions,” said the mayor.
The country achieved its best matric results in the past five years, with 87.3%. Almost all 75 districts across SA attained a pass rate of over 80%.
Ekurhuleni’s cream of the crop was among the country’s top achievers whom the Department of Basic Education and Training celebrated. At the same time, 48% of learners who wrote matric last year attained a Bachelor’s pass mark.

“It is very encouraging to witness our youth moving into the next chapter of their lives on such a positive note. We, as Ekurhuleni and the country, need hard-working young people to carry the hopes of our nation into a better future for all,” Xhakaza continued.
“I must also take this opportunity to motivate the learners who did not do well not to lose hope but rather pick up the pieces and give it another try.
“Education never ends, and slipping up in the process should not discourage you from trying again until you get it right. We are proud of you and believe in your capabilities to make it the next time.”
The mayor will host the Dr Godfrey Pitje Academic Excellence Awards early next month to celebrate and recognise the city’s top achievers.
