Hope Ubisi (18) from Zimisele Secondary School exceeded her expectations by earning seven distinctions in the 2024 NSC exams, fueled by discipline, determination, and a desire to challenge herself in the male-dominated field of mechanical engineering.
Kwa-Thema – Hope Ubisi (18) from Zimisele Secondary School achieved seven distinctions in the NSC exams of 2024.
“I really did not expect this. I was only confident that I would get five distinctions, not seven. What a way to end my high school career,” she exclaimed.
Ubisi said that some of the exams were challenging, and that is why she expected different results. The star learner said the closer it got to the day of the release of the results, the more anxious she became.
“I realised that so many people expected me to do well, and they would be so disappointed if I didn’t,” she added.
Ubisi obtained distinctions in mathematics, physical science, Isizulu, English (FAL), life orientation, life science and history.
“I am glad that I worked off a study plan, and I was disciplined. I studied every night, from before the prelims, and I kept going until the end. We had a lot of support from our teachers,” she explained.
She expressed her gratitude for all the people that believed in her. Until recently, Ubisi said she was not sure which career path she would choose.
“I asked so many people for their opinions on what I should study and I did some research online. That is how I discovered my interest in mechanical engineering. “I also chose it because it is a male-dominated field,” she said.
However, in 2025, Ubisi will participate in a partnership programme under Go-For-Gold, in Cape Town.
“I think the experience will help affirm that my chosen career is truly the right path for me. It is practical, like actually having a job, so I am very keen to start,” she concluded.
