The trial of the mayor of Kaolack, Serigne Mboup, against the Alliance Adik, was initially scheduled for Tuesday 21 January 2025, but has been postponed once again, this time to 18 March 2025. This case has its origin in a disbursement of funds involving the mayor and certain sports and cultural associations (ASC) of the commune. Maître Baboucar Cissé, one of Serigne Mboup’s lawyers, considers this case to be unfounded and considers that the proceedings against his client are more vexatious than genuine legal grounds. According to him, the plaintiffs have neither solid arguments nor substantial evidence to support their accusations. “We believe that this is a purely political process aimed at damaging the mayor’s image”, declared Maître Cissé. For this reason, the defence has claimed 500 million CFA francs in damages and interests, considering that this procedure constitutes a manifest abuse. He specified that, if this sum is obtained, it will be reversed integrally to the social works of Kaolack as well as to the Koranic schools of the city. “It is crucial to send a strong signal to dissuade such unjustified actions. If individuals can initiate unfounded criminal proceedings against a mayor, it would risk paralysing the functioning of the mairie”, he concluded.
