
The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN has cautioned the Chief Medical Directors, CMDs of hospitals in the country against engaging or retaining the services of Medical Doctors who have not renewed their professional licenses.
This is even as the MDCN advised parents of young Doctors not to distract their children who are undergoing their housemanship in hospitals.
The Registrar of MDCN, Professor Fatima stated this on Wednesday at Gregory University, Uturu, Abia during the 4th Induction ceremony of the 46 young Doctors in the University, where Dr Tikyaa Esther Terdoo emerged the best graduating medical student.
Professor Kyari, who was represented by Tijjani Mandaka, said it was unprofessional for a hospital to allow any Doctor whose license is yet to be renewed, to practice or to shield them from eyes regulatory bodies.
“All special fields must be registered before practice. In whatever you do, make sure you renew your license.
On CMDs, the MDCN Registrar said, “before you employ a specialist, that specialist must present an additional qualification registered by the Council and an additional practicing license before that employment.
While praising Gregory University Uturu for producing the 46 new Doctors, the MDCN Registrar advised the new Doctors to go through full registration processes for certification and to avoid being arrogant to Senior Doctors in hosp during their housemanship.
She advised the new Doctors to know when to seek a second opinion of a senior colleague on a patient’s case and when to refer such patient, informing them that any unprofessional handling of a patient’s case can attract petition from the patient’s relative and heavy sanction from MDCN .
In their speeches, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Cele Njoku and the founder of the institution, Professor Gregory Ibe charged the new Doctors to uphold the highest standard in medical practice by matching their skills with a deep sense of empathy for their patients.
In their Phycian’s Oath, the 46 new Medical Doctors promised to practice with dignity and conscience and to respect the secrets confided in them by patients, even after the patient’s death.
