Nigerian Army to overhaul training, strengthen special forcesĀ

The Nigerian Army has unveiled plans to revamp its training framework and update curricula across its educational institutions, aiming to develop a more agile and professional force capable of meeting evolving security challenges.

The announcement was made by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, during the closing session of the Army’s annual conference in Lagos.

According to Shaibu, the reforms will commence next year and will be guided by the Army’s changing operational environment.

Highlighting priority areas, the Army chief stated that Special Forces and Army Aviation would receive particular attention, with measures designed to enhance the capabilities of the Special Forces School.

Intelligence briefings presented at the conference indicated a more complex security landscape, emphasising the need for improved expertise in intelligence gathering, surveillance, reconnaissance, target acquisition, and cyber operations.

Shaibu emphasized that the overhaul would be centrally coordinated by Army Headquarters through the Department of Training, with a focus on realistic, mission-oriented exercises to better prepare troops for operational demands.

The Army leadership reaffirmed its commitment to troop welfare. Plans include addressing accommodation shortages in barracks nationwide, expediting ongoing housing projects, initiating new construction across divisions, and renovating ageing facilities.

The Chief of Army Staff also reiterated the Army’s dedication to providing post-service housing for retired personnel.
