Moscow probes Ukraine as bomb kills another Russian generalĀ

Moscow is investigating the possibility of Ukraine’s involvement in Monday’s explosion that claimed the life of a Russian Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov, born on March 11, 1969, was the Head of the Operational Training Directorate at the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.

Russian Investigative Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko confirmed his death following anĀ explosion in southern Moscow early Monday morning.

A preliminary investigation revealed that an explosive device planted under a parked car was activated on Yasenevaya Street in the capital Moscow.

Petrenko said investigators are pursuing various theories regarding the blast, ā€œone of them is that the crime was organized by the Ukrainian security agencies.ā€

Moscow has opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code (murder committed in a socially dangerous manner) and Article 222.1 (illegal trafficking of explosives).

Sarvarov played a role in the planning and execution of military operations in Syria (2015-2016) and was afterward appointed Head of the General Staff’s Operational Training Directorate.

He hailed from Gremyachinsk in Russia’s Perm Region and occupied major command positions during his military career, receiving multiple honours.

The deceased was a recipient of the Order of Courage, the Suvorov Medal, and the Order of Merit to the Fatherland, first and second class.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that President Vladimir Putin has been informed about the incident, one of several targeted attacks over the past year.

In April 2025, Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb in a town near Moscow. He was the Deputy Head of the General Staff’sĀ Main Operations Directorate.

In December 2024, Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, then Head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Protection Troops, died in Moscow after a bomb hidden in an electric scooter exploded.

In November 2024, a bomb planted under a car killed Valery Trankovsky, a Russian navy captain, in Sevastopol in Russia-annexed Crimea.

In October 2024, Andrei Korotkiy, who worked at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, died in a car bomb attack.
