Abuja–South East roads death traps – Igbo group warns, threatens 2027 backlash

The Igbo Community Association in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has condemned the poor state of road networks linking Abuja to the South East, describing them as “death traps,” accusing the Federal Government and lawmakers of years of neglect.

The association warned that public patience in the region is wearing thin and vowed to hold elected representatives accountable ahead of the 2027 general elections.

It stated that if lawmakers fail to take decisive action, the group would mobilise voters against their re-election, insisting that the ballot remains a powerful tool for enforcing accountability.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its President General, Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, and Secretary General, Mazi Emmanuel Chinwoke Onah, the association said the deplorable condition of the roads reflects a glaring imbalance in resource allocation and poses serious security and safety risks to travellers.

The association called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on the affected roads, especially as increased travel is expected during the holiday season.

It also urged the Minister of Works and South East lawmakers to urgently rehabilitate the roads to ensure safety and restore economic confidence.

“We emphasize that the South East remains a vital part of Nigeria, contributing significantly to the nation’s economy and development. We demand better infrastructure, security, and equitable resource allocation. The people of the South East deserve safe passage, improved livelihoods, and genuine inclusion in Nigeria’s growth narrative.

“We warn that the patience of South East communities is wearing thin. Come 2027, if our lawmakers fail to act decisively on this issue, we will not hesitate to mobilize voters against their re-election. The ballot is a powerful tool, and we will use it to hold leaders accountable. It’s time for Igbo lawmakers to prove they’re working for their people, not just occupying seats,” part of the statement read.
