About 1,000 US soldiers are set to depart for the Middle East in the upcoming days, according to Sky and NBC News.
Sources familiar with the plans informed the Associated Press that at least 1,000 troops from the 82nd Airborne Division will be dispatched to the Middle East shortly.
Earlier reports from Sky News and NBC News indicated that President Trump had sanctioned the deployment.
The 82nd Airborne is a distinguished infantry division known for its ability to be deployed on short notice and specializes in forcible entry parachute assaults.
This marks the latest deployment of American troops, following last week’s announcement by US officials that thousands of Marines aboard various Navy vessels will be heading to the region.
The deployment of Marines to the area has sparked speculation that the US may attempt to capture Kharg Island, which is crucial to Iran’s oil infrastructure, as reported by AP.
The US conducted airstrikes on the island over a week ago, targeting its defenses, while claiming that the oil infrastructure remained unharmed.
Iran had issued threats to mine the Gulf if the US appears poised to land troops.
Meanwhile, reports coming from the Middle East indicate that approximately 290 US troops have sustained injuries in the ongoing conflict with Iran.
A spokesperson from US Central Command informed CNN on Tuesday that of the 290 injured, 255 have returned to their duties, while ten US service members are reported to be in serious condition.
Additionally, CNN reported that thirteen US troops have lost their lives while serving.
As of March 21, Iran’s state broadcaster has reported that over 1,500 Iranians have died, along with more than 1,000 individuals in Lebanon, according to the country’s health ministry.
