War: Iraq attacks US base in Syria

Syria’s assistant defense minister, Sipan Hamo announced that the nation’s forces successfully thwarted a drone assault originating from neighboring Iraq, which was aimed at last US military installations in Syria.

“Earlier today, the US base in Qasrak, situated on our land, was targeted by four drones launched from Iraqi territory,” Sipan Hamo stated on X.

He further noted that “the drones were intercepted and destroyed without any casualties.

“We hold Iraq accountable and urge it to take measures to prevent future attacks that jeopardize our stability.”

This incident occurred just a day after the Syrian army reported that it had successfully defended against another drone strike from Iraq directed at al-Tanf, a base in the southeast that previously housed US forces.

Earlier this week, the Syrian military indicated that another installation in the northeast had also been subjected to a missile strike from Iraq, with an Iraqi official attributing the attack to a local armed group. In response, Iraq has detained four individuals in connection with that incident.

Iraq has become embroiled in the conflict that ignited due to US and Israeli strikes against Iran, with the war spreading throughout much of the Middle East.

Pro-Iranian Iraqi factions have taken responsibility for assaults on US interests within Iraq and throughout the region, while retaliatory strikes have also been directed at these groups.

In recent months, American forces have withdrawn from the al-Tanf base, as well as from Shadadi in the northeastern province of Hasakeh, and have commenced the withdrawal from the Qasrak base, which is also located in Hasakeh.
