Frustrated Kwa-Thema residents build their own speed humps

Local newsNews

Kwa-Thema – Residents on Mokone Street in Kwa-Thema, White City, installed speed humps on March 21. Their action came after a car knocked over a child, and they considered the number of careless drivers using the road daily.

Resident Moses Maseko said he raised the issue with the ward councillor in 2023, “I approached our ward Clr Njabulo Mbonani and told him about our urgent need for speed humps. Our children and grandchildren play on the road and are often scared off by a drunk or careless driver while playing.

“The councillor advised me to report the issue to the traffic offices based at the Kwa-Thema Customer Case Centre. I went there, reported them and was asked several questions as protocol.

“A year later, the humps have not been installed. We called a meeting as community members and took the initiative to contribute funds and make our speed humps. We got tired of living in fear for our safety when walking on our street,” said Maseko.

He continued, “We have united as residents and seen great change since the humps were installed. We know now that our children are safe. Cars slow down when driving through, too.”

Another resident, Vezi Zwane, said they aimed to ensure safety, “We have a doctor’s surgery on our street, which many cars visit daily. Most drive on the side of the road, while others come in a hurry. That might cause inconveniences to cars that park at the surgery. A mistake can happen. A car could cause a hit-and-run.

“Bad driving on this road is seen at night and during the day. Some drive drunk as well. Our homes are unsafe, too, especially those on the corners of the street. These homes are at risk of having drunk drivers knock over the fence or drive into the house,” Zwane added.

He is grateful for the installed humps, and residents are at ease with how everything worked out.
