After saving home, 1 dies trying to salvage engagement ring from Oakland home fire

December 28, 2024Steven Weatherford saved his dad, aunt, and brother from the flames. Steven Weatherford, a 37-year-old man, was killed in an Oakland Fire after he saved his family from a home fire on Christmas day. He died after performing a brave deed on New Year’s Eve while searching for an engagement ring to give to his partner inside the burning building. Local authorities reported to Fox 2 that Weatherford was able to escape the house after the fire broke out by his father, uncle, and nephew. He returned in to try and get an engagement ring from a healthy, but he chose not to leave with them. He had just purchased the necklace to give his sweetheart on New Year’s Eve. According to Michael Hunt, a part of the Oakland Fire Department, firefighters were called out after being notified about a home fire in the 3500 wall of Oak Knoll Blvd. around 6:15. After containing the fire, Hunt reported that rescuers discovered Weatherford incapacitated inside the house. Weatherford was nicknamed “gummy carry” by his friends and family, as he was known for his loving temperament.
Weatherford’s girl, LaShante Mayo, said after the flames,” Steve was truly the best people you could ever meet. He loved his home, his friends, and anyone so far. He died while attempting to evacuate the family from the home. ” He was going to consider, yeah. I didn’t realize, they told me this morning… I had given up on like until I had met him”, Mayo added. Following being discovered incapacitated, fire officials suggested that his cause of death was possible smoke inhalation.
Weatherford was in Oakland to observe Christmas at the time of the flames. Eunice Smith, Weatherford’s aunt, said” This is a yearly celebration. And when I say monthly, I mean going on for 40, 50 times. The cause of the fire has not been publicly identified, but Hunt said it appears to be spontaneous.” It’s not one of those items where it’s every other year.” The Oak Knolls-Golf Links, a group of Oakland people who call themselves” the Weatherford home,” have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help them through this trying occasion.
