Cape Agulhas – South Africa’s southernmost tip gained a new landmark for tourism and community development with the official launch of the Agulhas National Park Lighthouse Precinct.
Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment Minister Willie Aucamp, on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, hailed the R81 million project as a model of how heritage preservation can drive local economic growth.
The precinct, anchored by the historic Cape Agulhas lighthouse, has been transformed into a modern visitor facility through collaboration between the Department of Tourism, SANParks, and local government.
Beyond its symbolic and maritime significance, the site is now positioned as a hub for education, tourism, and community activity.
Crucially, the development has already delivered tangible benefits for residents.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment stated that 117 local jobs were created during construction, while nine small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) from the region participated in the project.
Skills training was also provided, ensuring that workers gained experience that can support future employment.
“These outcomes matter for communities living in and around protected areas,” Aucamp said.
“They reinforce the principle that conservation is not about exclusion, but about shared value and long-term benefit.”
The precinct includes a new Interpretation Centre, designed to showcase the environmental, maritime, and cultural history of Cape Agulhas.
Officials emphasised that education is central to conservation, with the centre offering structured learning opportunities for visitors and schools.
Accessibility has also been improved, with facilities designed to accommodate persons with disabilities, aligning with SANParks’ commitment to inclusive access.
Local leaders welcomed the investment, noting its potential to boost tourism in the Overberg District.
Commenting on the development, Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said: “Two years ago, in March 2024, I stood here when this was still just a construction site.
“And today, we see what your hands and imagination have delivered for the local community and tourists who will soon be flocking to this town.
“A clear demonstration of how tourism infrastructure contributes directly to job creation and enterprise development.
“This is what is possible through collaboration. Whether it is partnerships between government and the private sector, or cooperation across government.”
Executive Mayor Andries Franken said the precinct would strengthen the area’s reputation as a destination for both domestic and international visitors.
“Tourism is a key driver of our local economy, and this project ensures that our heritage sites contribute directly to job creation and community upliftment,” he said.

The launch reflects the government’s broader priorities under the Government of National Unity: expanding employment, growing the economy, and building public confidence through visible delivery.
Minister Aucamp stressed that the precinct should remain responsive to community needs, serving as a shared space for tourism, education, and environmental awareness.
For locals, the lighthouse — long a symbol of guidance and safety — now represents opportunity.
As the precinct opens its doors, residents stand to benefit not only from increased visitor numbers but also from the jobs, skills, and business opportunities created in its wake.
