Johannesburg – Amid mounting scrutiny of vehicle repossessions by a leading bank, The Bulrushes will soon publish an exposé of a repo car resale scam.
In one of the alleged rip-offs, a client wishing to purchase two repossessed vehicles – a truck and a BMW X6 – jointly worth about half a million rand – paid the money into a bank account.
The client was drawn into the car deal by a person (Her name is known to this publication) who claimed she was employed by a bank’s repossession department located in Simmons in Johannesburg.
The client stated that earlier in the year, around March, a hired driver was delivering building materials in a battered truck when he came across a woman who claimed she was a bank staffer.
Expressing concern at the state of the truck, the “staffer” told the driver that she could get him a reasonably priced repossessed vehicle that was in a much better state.
The unsuspecting driver informed the client who had hired him.
From there, the client was in direct contact with the bank staffer and was shown pictures of the truck and later a flashy BMW X6.
However, when the money was paid in full via a bank account, the vehicles were not delivered.
Attempts to register the new ownership also hit a snag, with claims that the client’s outstanding traffic violation fines needed to be settled first.
Once the fines were paid in full, the self-proclaimed bank employee became evasive and eventually confessed that the vehicles had been sold to another client.
While probing the matter, sources claimed that several bank staffers had been suspended over the matter.
To this day, the client has not been able to take ownership of the vehicles he paid for and has so far been unable to get his money back.
