Benue ADC gubernatorial aspirant warns leaders against false courtesy

Benue’s African Democratic Congress governorship aspirant, Engr. Andrew Aba, has cautioned politicians against mistaking courtesy for genuine respect, insisting that citizens clearly understand the character and record of those in public office.

He was reacting to a recent social media post credited to the First Lady, Mrs Remi Tinubu, in which she reportedly urged Nigerians to stop insulting their leaders, noting that the same leaders are often celebrated outside the country.

According to Aba, the admiration shown to Nigerian officials during foreign engagements should not be misconstrued as an endorsement of their leadership at home.

“There is a clear difference between courtesy and respect,” he said.

“Diplomatic courtesy is often driven by protocol and political interest, not by an honest assessment of leadership performance.”

He argued that foreign leaders, including US President Donald Trump, understand the realities of Nigerian governance and do not lose that awareness simply because of ceremonial praise or polite gestures during official events.

Aba maintained that Nigerians remain fully aware of the actions of their leaders, especially those who, in his view, prioritise personal enrichment over public welfare.

“Instead of solving the problems of the people, many leaders focus on self-aggrandisement, amassing wealth and investing it abroad, while the country’s future and the lives of generations yet unborn are damaged,” he said.

He warned that the consequences of poor leadership decisions could linger for decades, noting that the actions of a single political office holder can inflict long-term harm on the nation.

Looking ahead to the next general elections, Aba urged Nigerians to be deliberate in their choices.

“This is the time for the people to carefully evaluate those they intend to elect, leaders they can truly be proud of, both at home and abroad,” he said.

He called for the election of leaders who demonstrate integrity, genuinely love their people, promote peace, respect citizens, and create the conditions necessary for sustainable livelihoods and national growth.

“Let us choose leaders who will serve with integrity and help build a Nigeria we can all be proud of,” Aba said.
