Le journaliste René Capain Bassène, incarcerated for more than seven years at the Maison d’arrêt et de correction (MAC) de Ziguinchor in the framework of the so-called Boffa Bayotte killing case, was transferred to Dakar in the night of Friday 2 April 2025. He is now detained at the Special Pavilion, according to information obtained from his family. This Saturday, his brother went to the place, but was not allowed to see him. René Capain Bassène has been on hunger strike since Friday, following the decision of the Court of Cassation to confirm his sentence to life imprisonment. This verdict marks the end of his long judicial battle. On 6 January 2018, 14 woodcutters had been killed in the Boffa Bayotte classed forest in Casamance. In this case, two other defendants were sentenced to six months of prison with suspension for illegal possession of weapons. Ten other defendants were acquitted after more than five years of detention.
