Pretoria – The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court has granted North West businessman Suliman Carrim R100 000 bail with stringent bail conditions.
In this matter, allegations were that Carrim failed to appear before the Madlanga Commission after he was warned to appear on 14 August 2026.
A criminal case was registered against Carrim and investigated by the South African Police Service Commission’s Recommendations Task Team.
Carrim was subsequently arrested at the OR Tambo International Airport on 15 October 2026, shortly before he was due to board an international flight to Dubai.
Today, Wednesday, 28 October 2026, Magistrate Marc Curlewis granted Suliman Carrim bail of R100 000, stating that the risks identified by the State could be managed through strict bail conditions rather than continued detention.
The State had opposed Carrim’s release on bail, arguing that he was likely to evade his trial and that he was a flight risk since he was arrested at the airport.
However, Magistrate Curlewis imposed the following bail conditions on the accused:
- Carrim must attend all court proceedings unless formally excused by the court.
- surrender any international travel documents and may not apply for replacement travel documents without court approval.
- He may not leave South Africa without prior written permission from the court.
- He must reside at his verified address in Mahikeng (Mafikeng) unless authorised to move.
- He may not travel outside the relevant magisterial district without written permission from the investigating officer.
- He must provide his current cellphone number to the investigating officer.
- He must report in person to Mmabatho Police Station every Monday between 06:00 and 13:00.
- He must follow special procedures if illness prevents him from attending court.
Carrim’s matter arising from failing to appear before the Madlanga Commission was adjourned to 8 December 2026.
However, the businessman was remanded in custody owing to another matter in Musina, where he is a co-accused in a car theft case involving two of his employees.
Carrim will remain behind bars while he awaits the outcome of the Musina case, which his defence lawyer, Ulrich Roux, suggested was about to be finalised.
