A decongestion operation led by the Dakar-Plateau City Council turned violent on Tuesday, around 16 hours, on Rue Valmy, in the city centre. Municipal agents and street vendors engaged in a general brawl, causing two serious injuries among municipal officials. The intervention, supervised by the mairie directed by Alioune Ndoye, aimed to liberate the public road encumbered by merchants, including “tabliers” and other vendors à la sauvette. But the merchants, refusing to be dislodged, opposed a muscular resistance. According to the daily Libération, which reports the information, “two municipal agents were severely injured during the incident”. Their condition would require a thorough medical treatment. The police forces of the Rebeuss police station quickly intervened on the spot to calm the spirits and prevent the situation from escalating. Three travelling merchants were arrested and placed in custody.
