Eighteen More South African Football Fans Headed To World Cup To Cheer Bafana

Johannesburg – The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has announced that 18 additional South African football supporters will travel to Monterrey, Mexico, to cheer on Bafana Bafana in their third FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage match on 24 June.

The expansion of the Mzansi to the World Cup Lucky Fans Competition comes through the support of partners Cell C, Old School, HONOR, and Betway.

The initiative builds on the success of the original competition, which sent fans to Mexico City for Bafana Bafana’s opening fixture against Mexico on 11 June.

Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie welcomed the move on Sunday, 31 May 2026, saying: “More South Africans in the stands cheering for Bafana Bafana — that is what this initiative is about.

“We want Mexico to hear Mzansi.

“We want every PSL club represented in those stands, and we are grateful to our partners for helping make that possible.”

Competition Details
Supporter allocation: One fan from each of the 16 PSL clubs, plus two wildcard supporters. Orbit College FC is excluded, with Kruger United taking its place.

Prize package: Return flights to Monterrey, accommodation with meals, match tickets, ground transfers, and travel support.

Entry requirements: A 30-second video showcasing passion for Bafana Bafana, loyalty to a PSL club, supporter energy and motivation.

Competition dates: Opened today, Sunday, 31 May at 14:00 and closes Tuesday, 2 June at 17:00.

Eligibility: South African citizens and permanent residents aged 18+ with valid passports. Employees and family members of department or partner organisations are excluded.

Winners will be announced by Minister McKenzie and Deputy Minister Peace Mabe.

The department has encouraged fans to participate by visiting its official website and submitting entries.

Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana’s departure to Mexico for the 2026 FIFA World Cup was delayed earlier on Sunday, 31 May 2026, due to visa issues.

However, the problems have been resolved, and the South African men’s senior national football team is now scheduled to depart tomorrow, Monday, 1 June 2026.
