Ghana’s jails are in a severe state, and Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the decor minister-designate, did not hold up during his vetting on January 24, 2025 before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee. He expressed his surprise when he revealed that the regular income for individuals is only GH1 80, which he described as abominable. ” Even cats and dogs in our houses, how much do we spent on them”? he asked, drawing notice to the brutal treatment of prisoners.
Muntaka’s words emphasize the bleak reality of the prison system, where a small amount of money cannot possibly support the provision of sensible and healthy meals for inmates. A healthy diet is essential for both the successful treatment of prisoners and for physical wellbeing. However, this critical need is greatly unfulfilled, leaving inmates in a susceptible state.
But the problem isn’t limited to feeding only. Additionally, Mountaka made an important distinction between the oppressive living conditions and the serious overcrowding in Ghana’s prisons. These problems contribute to the spread of illnesses and make it more likely that people will reoffend once they are released. He emphasized the need for extensive prison reforms, citing Kenya as an example of successful factory work that supports the market and promotes rehabilitation.
