Durban – Nearly two dozen persons, including a financial advisor, prison warden, technician, truck driver, and a taxi driver, were nabbed over the weekend for driving while tipsy or sozzled.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma on Sunday, 16 August 2026, said at least 23 drivers were arrested after they were caught driving while inebriated.
“A prison warden, a truck driver, and a taxi driver were found with alcohol readings in their blood eight times over the legal limit this weekend,” MEC Duma stated.
“A financial advisor, who claimed to be well-off and to have been providing financial guidance to end-of-snow partygoers, was arrested last night for drunk driving in Newcastle.
“He was arrested together with 22 other motorists. This is in addition to 16 motorists who were arrested on Friday in Newcastle.”
MEC Duma said that from August last year to date, #NenzaniEzweni Operations have resulted in 7 742 drivers being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
“We continue to remove reckless motorists before they can kill innocent road users,” MEC Duma said.
