Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and United Way Miami have launched the Bright Path Pre-Apprenticeship Program to train the next generation of lineworkers, equipping students with essential skills to enter the energy sector. The first class of students was welcomed with enthusiasm, marking a significant step toward addressing the skilled labor shortages in the industry.
The program, which draws candidates from UpSkill Miami—a workforce development initiative by United Way Miami—aims to empower Miami-Dade County residents by offering specialized training for high-demand careers. Symeria Hudson, President and CEO of United Way Miami, expressed her excitement, stating, “At United Way, we believe solving society’s challenges requires strong partnerships and innovative solutions. Through this program, we are equipping nearly a dozen individuals with the skills and confidence needed to excel in the energy sector.”
The six-month program combines classroom learning, field demonstrations, computer-based modules, and hands-on training, including two weeks of on-the-job experience. Participants will gain practical knowledge in operating and maintaining heavy equipment, as well as repairing and restoring power lines—both above ground and underwater.
Ed De Varona, FPL Vice President of Power Delivery, emphasized the importance of the initiative, saying, “We are proud to collaborate with United Way Miami to provide students with unique career development opportunities. Lineworkers play a critical role in ensuring the daily lives of our customers run smoothly. This program will prepare students to pursue meaningful careers that benefit our company, communities, and the state of Florida.”
Upon successful completion, participants may be considered for employment opportunities with FPL in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, offering them a pathway to stable and rewarding careers.
