Herder’s killing in Plateau sparks fresh unrest

A fresh incident of violence has been reported in Riyom, where a herdsman was killed and two suspects arrested.
The development was contained in a post shared on X on Monday by security analyst, Zagazola Makama.

According to the post, the incident happened around 11:55 a.m. on Sunday in the Makera area.

The attack also left six cattle dead, while about 20 others were injured.

According to Makama, the killing is said to be part of a series of recent attacks in the area.

Reports indicate that the development followed earlier violence in the same local government, where two local hunters were killed and another’s injured in a separate attack.

Security sources said troops under Operation ENDURING PEACE responded quickly after receiving a distress call and moved to the scene.

“On arrival, troops discovered that one herder had been killed, six cattle were shot dead, while several others sustained gunshot injuries,” the sources said.

The troops reportedly sighted some suspects fleeing towards the Golhoss community and chased them. Two of the suspects were arrested, while others escaped.

The body of the victim was later recovered and handed over to officials of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN).
