‘It Is Not Advisable To Build A Statue For Yourself While Alive’– Speaker Bagbin Criticizes Akufo-Addo’s Controversial Takoradi Statue

Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, the speaker of parliament, has voiced his opinion on the continued controversy surrounding Nana Akufo-Addo statue in Takoradi.
Bagbin, during a political visit to Ghanaian communities in Coted’Ivoire last month, expressed his criticism, emphasizing that leadership should be about setting excellent examples. ” When you are dead, it is not recommended to create a memorial for yourself. When you are no more, the people who admire what you have done may create one for you”, he remarked.
The monument, unveiled in November 2024, immediately sparked widespread public reaction, with some Ghanaians questioning its importance in lighting of the Western Region’s development challenges. The Akufo-Addo management, according to reviewers, had made very little of their impact on the area, making the statue an insult to their challenges.
On January 13, 2025, mysterious persons vandalized and destroyed the statue, which was a dramatic change in the discussion. Bagbin also warned against activities that may encourage moral degradation, stating,” Don’t pig evil, if you sow bad, you may reap it. Leadership is about setting the best case for individuals.
