Kano Government registers inmates in a healthcare program, with 7 cases of tuberculosis confirmed.  

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) has enrolled inmates at the Goron Dutse Custodial Center in the state’s Basic Healthcare Scheme, with approval from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. This information was shared in a statement by Aminu Ahmad Turaki, the Public Relations Officer of KSCHMA, on Wednesday. The statement noted that during a briefing by Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, it was revealed that 108 inmates were screened for tuberculosis (TB), with 7 testing positive for the disease. Furthermore, 21 inmates showed symptoms indicative of TB. “We are dedicated to ensuring the health and wellbeing of all residents of Kano State, including those in custodial centers.” Dr. Rahila emphasized the importance of addressing the healthcare needs of inmates for effective correctional management and their rehabilitation back into society. The screening not only detected tuberculosis (TB) but also highlighted additional health issues among the inmates. She reported that 162 inmates suffered from skin infections such as eczema, scabies, dermatitis, and impetigo. Additionally, 5 inmates had hypertension, 3 were diagnosed with diabetes, and 1 had osteoporosis. Dr. Rahila confirmed that all these inmates are receiving treatment and medication at the Goron Dutse Custodial Center, aided by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency. She expressed that this initiative supports the Governor’s goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage for all residents of Kano State. She concluded by stating that the health and well-being of inmates are essential for effective correctional management and successful rehabilitation and reintegration.
