Libya: the desert reveals the horror of human trafficking with the discovery of nearly 50 bodies

Two mass graves containing nearly 50 bodies have been discovered in the Libyan desert, shedding light on a new tragedy linked to the migrant crisis in that country. According to the charitable organization al-Abreen, which helps migrants in the east and south of the country, most of the victims were shot before being buried. A second mass grave was discovered in a centre used by human traffickers, containing at least 30 bodies. According to the testimony of survivors, up to 70 people may have been buried. The authorities are currently continuing the searches to confirm this information. This tragedy is unfortunately not an isolated case. In 2024, the Libyan authorities had already exhumed the bodies of 65 migrants in the region of Shuayrif, located 350 kilometres south of Tripoli. These findings testify to the extent of the violence and abuses suffered by migrants in Libya, a country that has become a focal point for human trafficking.
