Pretoria – President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared Wednesday, 4 November 2026 – the date for local government elections – as a public holiday.
Announcing the move, in terms of Section 2A of the Public Holidays Act of 1994, President Ramaphosa also called on registered voters to use the public holiday to exercise their democratic right and civic duty.
He said that voting in this election empowers citizens to elect local public representatives and influence service delivery where they live.
Voters are reminded that in local governent elections they can only cast their votes at the polling stations in wards where they are registered.
If they travel, voters will not be able to transfer their votes to voting stations away from their designated wards.
President Ramaphosa also urged employers to make provision for employees to exercise their Constitutional right to vote on 4 November 2026.
