NAOSS Convention: Students urge action on greater involvement, bursary

Students under the aegis of the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS) have called on the national body to step up its efforts in promoting active student participation through skill-acquisition programs, empowerment initiatives, and other legal engagement strategies.

They expressed concern over the increasing level of apathy affecting the association across various campuses, maintaining that something must be done to uplift the morale of students.

The students spoke on the general state of NAOSS on Saturday at the 2025 National Convention and election held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta.

They also harped on the lack of consistency in the bursary scheme for Ogun State students, noting that the last bursary was disbursed in 2023.

According to a communique issued at the end of the convention, the students asked the association’s new leadership to continue maintaining regular communication with the State’s Commissioner for Education in order to guarantee that students from the state receive the bursary, particularly given the current financial difficulties.

Part of the communique reads: “One of the major issues deliberated upon at the convention was the general state of NAOSS.

Senator Abiola Toheebat, the Chapter President of TASUED, expressed deep concern over the increasing level of apathy affecting NAOSS across various campuses.

“She opined that the national body must intensify efforts to encourage active student participation in the association through empowerment initiatives, skill acquisition programmes, and other lawful engagement strategies for Ogun State students.

“Senator Ajani Ismail from Ahmadu Bello University highlighted the lack of a consistent bursary scheme for Ogun State students, noting that the last bursary was disbursed in 2023. He urged the incoming leadership to maintain consistent engagement with the Commissioner for Education to ensure that Ogun students receive the bursary they deserve, especially in view of the prevailing economic hardship.

“Senator Adeshina Faridah from the University of Abuja lamented the rising insecurity in the country and commended the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, for his proactive collaboration with security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property in the state.”

DAILY POST reports that at the convention, Oluwafemi Ajayi emerged as the new national president, Olanose James as his Vice President 1, Lawal Gbolahan as Vice President 2, with Kamil Iseoluwa as Secretary and Folarin Israel as Auditor, while in the legislative arm, Olabode Opeyemi emerged as Senate President, Tijani Abdulazeez as Deputy, Sokoya Abdulkareem as Clerk, and Sodipe Emmanuel as Chief Whip.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee (CPC), Comrade Akinwunmi Akinshola, welcomed all 60 senators who were drawn from different campuses, urging them to cast their votes without fear or bias.

Akinshola, however, appealed to all aspirants to embrace peace and sportsmanship, stressing that the election was not a do-or-die affair and that only one person could occupy a particular office at a time.
