Ogun govt explains Iperu-Ilishan flooding, begins drainage clearance

The Ogun State Government has explained the cause of recent flooding along the Iperu-Ilishan Road, assuring residents that steps are already being taken to address the situation.

The development was disclosed in a statement shared in April 2026 on the official page of the government.

According to the statement, preliminary findings showed that the flooding, particularly around a shop in Iperu Town, was linked to its location below road level, which made it vulnerable to water accumulation.

The government added that blocked drainage channels along the corridor also contributed to the incident, noting that heaps of laterite from previous construction works had obstructed the free flow of storm water.

It further explained that the intensity of rainfall at the time increased the volume of water, worsening the situation.

“The flooding recorded at a tiller-seller’s shop in Iperu Town occurred largely because the structure is situated below the current road level,” the statement read.

In response, Governor Dapo Abiodun was said to have ordered the immediate deployment of equipment to clear the affected drainage systems and remove blockages.

The statement noted that workers have already been mobilised to begin clearing sand and laterite from the drainage paths, while additional equipment is expected on site to speed up the process.

It added that the floodwater has since receded, with the road now accessible to motorists.

The government, however, advised residents to avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels, warning that such actions could hinder proper water flow and lead to future flooding.

Officials also reiterated the state’s commitment to maintaining infrastructure and improving drainage systems across affected areas.
