The Ogun State Police Command has secured the conviction of one Samson Okonkwo for counterfeiting electrical cables bearing the Coleman brand.
This was contained in a statement by the Command’s Spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, on Monday.
According to the statement, the judgment was delivered on September 24, 2026, by His Worship O. P. Mobee at the Magistrate Court, Ojodu Abiodun Magisterial District.
Okonkwo and other suspects currently at large were arraigned on April 10, 2025, in Charge No. MOJ/138C/2025, on four counts bordering on conspiracy, forgery, unlawful possession and fraudulent sale of fake Coleman cables belonging to Coleman Technical Industries Limited.
The offences were allegedly committed between January 24 and April 9, 2025, in Akute, Ogun State.
At the end of the trial, the court found Okonkwo guilty after the prosecution tendered 317 coils of fake electrical cables bearing Coleman packaging as exhibits.
He was convicted and sentenced under Section 3(3)(b) of the Merchandise Marks Act.
The Command said the conviction highlights the danger posed by substandard cables, which increase risks of electrical faults, fires and electrocution.
Reacting to the judgment, the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the investigators and prosecution team and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to fighting counterfeiting and economic crimes.
He called for stronger collaboration among law enforcement agencies, manufacturers, regulators and the public to identify fake products and protect consumers.
The Police urged members of the public to be cautious when buying electrical products and to report suspected counterfeit goods through appropriate channels.
