La Ligue sénégalaise contre le tabac (Listab) is firmly opposed to a draft revision of the anti-tobacco law of 2014 in Senegal. According to the organisation, this project has been elaborated and validated in a technical commission, since November 2023, in conditions, it says, ” opaque, suspectes et non transparentes “. In a communiqué dated 5 August, the Ligue Sénégalaise Contre le Tabac (LISTAB) requests, “to His Excellency, the President of the Republic, and to Monsieur le Premier ministre to block and withdraw immediately this draft anti-tobacco law introduced in the administrative circuit of the Government of Senegal by the Ministry of Health and Social Action (MSAS) “. La Listab calls on the “government not to present this project to the National Assembly and urges the minister to assess the situation with the legitimate actors of the sector before taking new measures”.. The LISTAB further requests “the Government of Senegal to ensure that this alleged bill is neither presented nor placed on the agenda of any Council of Ministers”. The Court held that the civil society which fought against tobacco in Senegal had never been involved in the preparation of these alleged texts and that, consequently, the credibility and reliability of the texts concerned were called into question. “We invite the Minister of Health, Mr Ibrahim Sy, to take stock of the situation in the fight against tobacco in Senegal with the real representative and legal actors, and to meet with the real representative and legal actors in order to take stock of the situation in the fight against tobacco in Senegal, and not to rely solely on his administration, or on those who are acting T dans un activisme suspect”, lit on the note.
