Mokopane – Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA) says it has demonstrated its commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare in South Africa’s mining and rural communities through a strategic investment in the newly completed Mogalakwena Private Hospital in Mokopane, Limpopo.
The investment was made through two investment funds managed by Summit Africa (a black owned and managed fund manager), namely the Summit Social Infrastructure Fund Partnership (SSIF or Main Fund), in which RMA is one of seven Limited Partners (Investors).
The other investment fund includes Summit Social Infrastructure Co-investment Fund 1 Partnership (Co-investment Fund), in which RMA is currently the sole Investor, which co-invested alongside the Main Fund for this project.
The 65‑bed acute hospital, now fully constructed, licensed by the Department of Health and operational, marks a significant milestone for the region.
As the first and only private hospital within a 60km radius, Mogalakwena Private Hospital will serve a catchment of more than 378 000 people, including thousands of mineworkers and their families.
The facility is located just 19 kilometres from Valterra Platinum’s Mogalakwena Mine, the largest open‑pit platinum mine in the world, anchoring a major economic hub in the Waterberg District.
“RMA’s investment in SSIF and the Co-investment Fund forms part of its Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) programme, a key requirement of its Compensation Fund (CF) licence, which mandates that 20% of RMA’s free surplus be allocated directly or indirectly to SRI projects,” Thiru Pather, Executive Head: Investments at RMA, said.
The SSIF, an impact-focused fund dedicated to purpose-built healthcare and education infrastructure, aligns strongly with this mandate.
Through the Co‑investment Fund, RMA is able to increase its participation in opportunities that support mining communities, rural development, and improved access to essential services.
A catalytic healthcare investment for Limpopo
Mogalakwena Private Hospital addresses a long‑standing structural gap in healthcare access in the municipality.
Before this development, residents relied solely on three public hospitals, resulting in a bed ratio of just 1.31 beds per 1 000 people, far below the national average of 2.3 and the OECD average of 5.1.
The new facility lifts the ratio to 1.49 beds per 1 000 people, significantly improving healthcare availability for insured and self‑paying patients.
The operator, Nimpa – part of the established NHC healthcare network – has co‑invested alongside the Fund, which strengthens stakeholder alignment and ensures long-term sustainability of the investment.
Delivering measurable social and economic impact
The development has already generated substantial socio-economic benefits. According to SSIF’s impact reporting:
- 298 local contractor jobs were created during construction, with 33% youth participation.
- 20 local businesses were contracted, supporting enterprise development in the municipality.
- The hospital will support 80 permanent healthcare jobs.
- The facility is expected to treat approximately 10,000 patients annually, improving access to quality healthcare for mining communities, government employees, and surrounding rural populations.
These outcomes align with RMA’s purpose-driven mandate to protect livelihoods, strengthen communities and support long-term wellbeing, particularly in mining towns and peri-urban areas where access to healthcare is limited.
A strategic extension of RMA’s investment mandate
RMA’s investment in Mogalakwena Private Hospital through SSIF and the Co-investment Fund demonstrates how its SRI strategy is translating into tangible, high‑impact infrastructure in underserved regions.
Through the Co‑investment Fund, RMA specifically targets projects that support economic activity and job creation in mining provinces such as Limpopo, North West and Mpumalanga.
“This investment reflects RMA’s commitment to ensuring that mining communities have access not only to compensation, but to the broader ecosystem of care that supports recovery, dignity and long‑term wellbeing,” said Imtiaz Vally, Group Chief Financial Officer at RMA.
“Mogalakwena Private Hospital is a powerful example of how strategic social infrastructure investment can uplift communities, stimulate local economies and improve quality of life.”
Strengthening healthcare resilience in mining communities
The hospital’s location within a major mining corridor ensures that thousands of mineworkers, many of whom are RMA beneficiaries, will benefit from improved access to emergency care, specialist services, and acute treatment.
The facility also supports broader community upliftment by attracting complementary infrastructure and services to the area.
RMA’s partnership with Summit Africa underscores a shared commitment to building resilient, high‑quality social infrastructure across South Africa.
As the SSIF continues to expand its portfolio of healthcare and education assets, RMA’s investment will remain central to driving impact in mining and rural communities.
