Scholes: Gyokeres Doesn’t Suit Arteta’s Tactical Approach at Arsenal

Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has pointed out that new Arsenal recruit Viktor Gyokeres may struggle to adapt to manager Mikel Arteta’s strategies. Gyokeres had a standout season in the Primeira Liga last year, scoring 39 goals and leading Sporting to another league title. Despite his remarkable performance, Scholes expressed concerns during a discussion on The Overlap Fan Debate about whether Gyokeres can fit into Arteta’s possession-based approach, especially since he was accustomed to playing in a counter-attacking style at Sporting. Additionally, there was a note about a Nigerian forward completing a move to MLS club Real Salt Lake. “The only concern I have about Gyokeres is that while at Sporting Lisbon, he often plays in a counter-attacking style, especially in European matches,” Scholes remarked. “Consider Arsenal, who dominate possession; will he be smart enough to make those runs behind defenders? Much of what we’ve seen from him involves sprinting from the halfway line, and he’s incredibly fast, overpowering opponents and striking the ball hard. But will he demonstrate the intelligence of a striker like Isak?” Is Gyokeres capable of doing that?
