‘ She was my infant’: Claims upgraded in death of Calgary person 

Nothing can take her daughter back, but Garnita Van Tassell, is hoping her home will eventually get some justice as the initial hearing began Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, for four of the men accused in the shooting of her child, 37-year-old Tara Miller. Miller’s body was found on March 30, 2023, in a niche at the crossroads of Highway 522 and 128 Street near Okotoks, Alta.

The Crown announced that the murder charges against Greg Schuster, Jared Burke, and Shyana Popplestone had been upgraded to first-degree death as the primary receiving rolled in. The third person in court on Thursday, Gurpreet Gill, was now facing a cost of first degree murder. Two other men, charged in Miller’s death, may appear in court at a later date.

As the initial hearing for the four people accused of her death began, members of Tara Miller’s family and friends gathered outside the Calgary court.

As trials began, outside the courtroom Miller’s mom, sister, some relatives and other followers gathered up, holding pictures of Miller and wearing shirts bearing the phrase” Justice for Tara”. For Miller’s family, being in the court, was the first moment she had seen the accused face-to-face. ” She was my child, my youngest, I only had two, and I need to be here for her”, said Van Tassell. 1: 38
Family says neighbors among those charged with Homicide of Tara MillerMiller’s girl said the family had been waiting a long time for this day. ” I just don’t want them to miss her name”, said Jennifer Miller. ” She lit up a space. Quite vociferous and arrogant. Only the best buddy you could ever have.” As agonizing as they think the court proceedings will remain, her cousin, Monica Blair, is assured that the family will eventually receive justice. ” It’s ripping the band-aid off over and over again, but we’re here, we’re going to get some responses”, Blair said. ” No matter what happens through any of the proceedings today, through the next month, or however long it takes it won’t get enough”, said Van Tassell. The initial hearing, which may determine whether there is enough evidence to bring the case to test, is scheduled to last five weeks.
