Cape Town – Team South Africa finished fourth at the inaugural World Spelling Bee Championships held in Shanghai, China.
Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube today, Monday 3 August 2026, hosted a virtual welcoming ceremony with Team South Africa and their parents to celebrate the country’s outstanding fourth-place finish.
Minister Gwarube congratulated the six learners, their families, educators and partners for flying the South African flag with distinction and demonstrating the exceptional talent within the country’s basic education system.
In taking fourth place, Team South Africa’s individual achievements included two learners finishing in the world’s top 10, and all six learners progressing beyond the competition’s Artificial Intelligence-enabled preliminary assessment.
This represents one of South Africa’s strongest performances on the international academic stage.
Speaking during the engagement, Minister Gwarube said the team’s success was a powerful reminder that South African learners were capable of competing with and outperforming the best in the world when provided with the right opportunities, dedicated educators and strong foundations.
She commended the parents for the sacrifices they have made to support their children and thanked the department’s officials who accompanied the learners and partners who contributed to building pathways that enable talented learners to progress from school and provincial competitions to continental and global platforms.
Minister Gwarube noted that South Africa’s fourth-place finish among more than 20 participating nations was further evidence that the country’s education system was producing learners who can excel in highly competitive international environments.
She said the achievement reflects the growing impact of sustained investments in literacy, reading and foundational learning, while reinforcing the Department’s commitment to raising standards of academic excellence across the country.
“South Africa’s recent success at both the African Spelling Bee Championships and now the World Spelling Bee Championships demonstrates that the nation’s learners are increasingly recognised as world-class competitors,” said Minister Gwarube.
She said the Department of Basic Education will continue working with its partners to strengthen and expand the National Spelling Bee Programme across all nine provinces, ensuring that more learners have access to opportunities that promote reading, literacy and academic excellence.
Minister Gwarube congratulated Team South Africa on this historic achievement.
The Minister said she looks forward to building on this success as the country continues to showcase the strength and competitiveness of its basic education system on the global stage.
