The top was requested by the opposition democratic conservatives of Newfound and Labrador today to postpone a vote on a draft energy agreement with Quebec’s hydro utility until independent experts review it. During Day 3 of a four-day discussion about the memorandum of understanding that was unveiled last quarter between both regions ‘ public utility companies, party chief Tony Wakeham made the need in the provincial government. Wakeham claims an independent review do follow the recommendations of a public investigation into the fatal Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project in Labrador, which was finished in 2023 despite years of delay and cost overruns of tens of millions of dollars. Liberal House Leader John Hogan responded by saying the state’s power board may look into any projects that might have an impact on ratepayers, a move that Muskrat Falls didn’t make. In addition, Premier Andrew Furey has pledged to form an independent panel of experts to give guidance as Hydro-Québec and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro work on a last version of the agreement, which is anticipated to be completed in 2026.
