Transfer: Rangers boss addresses Fernandez’s future amid Chelsea, Arsenal links

Rangers manager Danny Röhl hopes Emmanuel Fernandez will remain at the club beyond this summer.

The 24-year-old only joined the Light Blues from English League One club Peterborough United last summer but has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Scottish Premiership.

Fernandez was the only Rangers player named in the Scottish Premiership PFA Team of the Season.

He has also gained recognition at the international level, making his debut for Nigeria against Iran last month.

The centre-back has attracted the interest of top clubs around Europe including Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayer Leverkusen, and Borussia Dortmund.

Fernandez could push for a transfer in the summer, while Rangers might also find it difficult to turn down a hefty fee for the player.

Röhl, however, believed Rangers is a big club, and can also satisfy the defender’s ambition.

“We should not forget one year ago he played in League One. Now he plays for a big club. If everything goes well, what we want, maybe he can play next year as well in the highest competition,” the gaffer said ahead of his side’s clash with Motherwell.
