Fresh facts have emerged over the killing of a 200-level part-time political science student of the University of Benin, who was shot dead by gunmen on Sunday in front of the institutionās main gate.
DAILY POST had earlier reported that the incident was suspected to be cult-related.
However, new findings now suggest that the killing may have been connected to an alleged unfulfilled business deal.
Dorathy Ubah, who was hit by a stray bullet, reportedly died on Monday as a result of her injuries at the hospital.
However, the authorities of the Edo State Police Command said only one person, Alexander Omogiate, died in the incident, while others are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
The Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Police Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, in a statement, described reports of the death of the female victim as false and unfounded.
Ikoedem, however, said the command has commenced an investigation into the fatal shooting.
She gave the names of the occupants of the deceasedās vehicle as Onwuke Blessed, Alexander Omogiate, and Chinenye Christian Mbagwu.
According to her, the Edo State Police Command is investigating a fatal shooting incident that occurred on May 10, 2026, at about 5 p.m. around the University of Benin axis, Benin City.
āPreliminary investigation reveals that three occupants of a Mercedes-Benz GLK vehicle, namely Onwuke Blessed āMā, Alexander Omogiate āMā, and Chinenye Christian Mbagwu āMā, were driving out of the University of Benin when an unidentified white GLK vehicle suddenly intercepted them at the University of Benin main campus gate, Ugbowo, lowered its glass and opened fire on the victims before escaping to an unknown destination.
āAs a result of the attack, all occupants sustained varying degrees of gunshot injuries, including a female passerby identified as Dorathy Ubah.
āUpon receipt of the report, police operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene, and the victims were immediately rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for urgent medical attention.
āSadly, Alexander Omogiate was confirmed dead by the medical doctor on duty, while the other injured victims are responding to treatment.
āThe report is untrue, misleading and unfounded. The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, personally visited the victims at the hospital a few hours ago, where they were all seen responding positively to treatment.
āThe Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, Monday Agbonika, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident with a view to tracking down the fleeing perpetrators and bringing them to justice,ā she said.
Ikoedem added that the command has also beefed up security at the hospital to forestall any further attack on the recovering victims.
DAILY POST also learnt that the killing of the 200-level part-time student was allegedly linked to a N90 million internet fraud deal.
A source who spoke on condition of anonymity alleged that the failed deal degenerated after one of the suspected assailants tracked the deceased, Omogiate, to class over the sharing of the proceeds.
The source alleged that the matter was initially settled after the late Omogiate reportedly promised to give part of the proceeds to his colleagues.
āA week later, the deceased initially agreed to pay but later refused. That refusal allegedly escalated tension on campus before the attack.
āThis led to anxiety as those who could not get their share of the millions resorted to confrontation. Dangerous weapons like machetes and other sharp objects were used, and a few people sustained injuries.
āOn Sunday evening, which was the last day of their exams, the bubble burst when Omogiate was allegedly trailed from the classroom by a suspected course mate to the main gate, where they opened fire on his car multiple times,ā the source stated.
